Following Tim Welland’s car wasn’t difficult even though the evening rush hour had technically finished, there was still a lot of other traffic to hide amongst. And he drove like an old man, or at least one with a lot on his mind. Careful, she warned herself, dangerous to make assumptions like that. But he was signalling like nervous visitors to Milton Keynes did on the roundabouts.

Until he reached the A5 roundabout when he sped up so fast Nikki was sure he’d gone through the lights on red. He must have realised she was behind him. When the lights changed she drove in his wake, scouring the exits but she didn’t think his brake lights pattern were any of the dark cars turning off. She drove right round, there, he’d gone back the way they’d just come. He definitely knew she was following him.

She pulled into the left-hand lane of the dual carriageway grid road and kept a careful distance between them. There was a lot of comfort in knowing she could reach him in a couple of seconds if she needed to. Thanks, Tesla, for the effortless speed and the heated steering wheel.

Tim retraced the journey they’d just done but his burst of acceleration had settled down to just below the speed limit. Had he lost sight of her? She watched him turn into the car park of one of the prestige gyms Milton Keynes offered. It was no big deal if he’d come to work out but why then the back-tracking of himself? She drove past the turning, waiting until she was sure he’d have already gone inside before she parked at the opposite end to where she could see his car tucked on the end of a short row. The entrance was lit up so well, he was easy to spot, swiping in. Tall, lean, a black holdall in one hand.

The way he’d driven there made no sense, he’d suddenly decided to go for an emergency work-out? Nikki watched the entrance after he’d disappeared into the inside proper of the building. She couldn’t go after him, she was too recognisable. He’d spot her burgundy hair before she even got inside.

In the boot she found a beanie that Anouk must have stood on after a muddy walk. She turned it inside out and pulled it on, tucked her hair up inside it, making up a story as she approached the entrance.

“Hi,” she smiled at the guy on the desk who wore a vest top and short shorts or maybe it was just that he couldn’t find workout gear to fit over his impressive biceps, shoulders, thighs. Chances were he was the poster boy for the gym. He grinned back at her, nearly blinding her. “It’s horrible out there. Do you have a café that’s open to non-members?”

“Only at weekends, in the week, it’s members only.”

“Ah, okay, thanks.”

“You can have a tour if you’re thinking about joining.” He raised his eyebrows, showed his luminous teeth again. But that would take Nikki too close to Tim, wherever he was in the gym.
